Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated at North from September 15th – October 15th. Classrooms celebrated this month in a variety of ways. Some displayed their learning by beautifully decorating their classroom doors, while other classrooms participated in read alouds and discussions of influential Hispanic Americans.
In Mrs. Giovannelli’s classroom, children celebrated by bringing in authentic dishes from various Hispanic cultures. Each student had the opportunity to share the name of what they brought and why the dish is special in their culture. One child shared, “My grandmother woke up at 4 AM this morning to make these tamales for our classroom. Just take one bite of it. It tastes like heaven to me!” Mrs. Giovannelli went on to add that in Mexico, corn is the basis of many foods including tortillas and masa (dough made from corn). However, tamales are saved for very special celebrations – such as the one this fifth grade class was having!
