World Down Syndrome Day is celebrated each year on March 21st. This day signifies the uniqueness of the triplication of the 21st chromosome which causes Down Syndrome. Miss Messina’s class kicked off the celebration by wearing mismatched socks to school. Socks were chosen because the karyotype of Down Syndrome chromosomes actually look like mismatched socks and crazy socks promote the celebration of our differences.
North third graders learned about this unique condition as teachers raised awareness of their abilities, accomplishments, similarities, and differences. Students were visited by Frankie, Miss Messina’s nephew. Third graders had the chance to learn about his special story and asked him questions about living with Down Syndrome. The most important lesson learned was that children with Down Syndrome deserve the same love, respect, friendship, and inclusion as everyone else!
